Boat trips in Lisbon this winter: sunset cruises on the Tagus
Lisbon is one of the mildest capitals in Europe in winter, and the Tagus river remains one of the best places to see the city. From November to March, GMS Yachting continues to organise private boat trips with a skipper, and the early sunsets make the late afternoon the most popular time to go out on the water.
Every trip is private: only your group on board, with departures from Doca de Santo Amaro, Doca de Alcântara or Marina Parque das Nações, depending on the boat.
What time is sunset in Lisbon in winter?
The sun sets between about 5:15 pm and 5:40 pm in November and December, between 5:25 pm and 6 pm in January, between 6 pm and 6:30 pm in February, and between 6:30 pm and 7 pm in March, then close to 8 pm once the clocks change at the end of March.
A sunset cruise usually lasts 2 hours, or 3 hours if you want to go further down the river towards Cascais. The skipper times the departure so you are on the water for the golden hour, and you come back as the city lights come on.
Which boat for a winter trip?
In winter, a motor yacht with an indoor saloon and cabins, such as the Princess 65 or the Lunga 72, lets everyone warm up inside between two views of the river. For larger groups, the Catamaran Bali 54 welcomes up to 37 guests.
Prices are per boat, not per person: from about 380 € for a small sailboat and around 750 € to 1,300 € for most yachts and catamarans, skipper and fuel included (VAT not included).
Practical tips for a winter boat trip
Bring a warm layer and a windproof jacket: it is always cooler on the water than in the city. Safety comes first: if the wind or sea conditions do not allow a safe trip, the skipper postpones it at no extra cost, and if no new date is possible, the amount paid is refunded in full.
